Police led Kardzhali mayor Erol Myumyun out of the town hall, the municipality's press office said. The Interior Ministry said it is checking the case.

Ayten Sabri, a deputy speaker of parliament and MP for the DPS party, said police took Myumyun from his office and searched his home. He is now at the district police department. Nobody knows why police acted, she said.

Town hall staff and deputy mayors gathered outside the regional Interior Ministry directorate in Kardzhali. Sabri and DPS MP Bayram Bayram are also there.

"The worst thing is that these raids keep targeting mayors of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) in the same way," Sabri told the BTA news agency. She said it raises the question of whether this is a state ruled by law, or whether the work will go on with pressure and repression.

"There is only one question: are only DPS mayors the ones who must be repressed?" the MP added. She also asked whether only they had done their jobs in some way, so that they are now being checked.

Sabri believes Belitsa mayor Radoslav Revanski faced the same treatment yesterday, and that today it is Myumyun's turn.
