Wheat prices on world markets have fallen for a ninth week in a row. December wheat futures in Chicago are about $220 a tonne, the lowest since early July, experts at the Sofia Commodity Exchange (SCE) said.

The Chicago price dropped again on Wednesday and is now almost 25% below its September peak.

Experts link the fall to Russia's decision to let grain ships leave ports on the Sea of Azov, for the first time since July. This raises hopes that some exports may restart through the Black Sea.

On the Euronext exchange, wheat fell to €227 a tonne, or about $253 a tonne.

Maize is also cheaper. December futures in Chicago are about $178 a tonne, and the fall has now lasted five weeks. The analysis blames the US harvest. Overly wet weather in part of the corn belt has only briefly supported prices. The November contract on Euronext is about €288 a tonne, or about $321 a tonne, while later contracts have got cheaper.

Sugar fell on Monday. The March contract for raw sugar in New York is about $423 a tonne, and white sugar in London, for December delivery, is $515.40 a tonne. Both are at their lowest since early October.

Bread-making wheat was sold on the SCE at €198 a tonne in early October. For feed wheat, only a bid at €192 a tonne remains.

In the last days of October, there were buyers of canned food on the exchange. Moussaka was sought at €2.62 a kg, chicken with peas at €2.89 a kg, and bean stew at €2.01 a kg. Products on offer include green beans at €0.75 a kg, green peas at €1.94 a kg, "Strawberry" jam at €3.25 a kg and "Shipka" marmalade at €3.71 a kg. A week ago, pâté, stuffed peppers, bean stew and other tinned goods were also on sale, and the choice of canned food remains wide.

There were also fuel deals on the exchange this week. Propane-butane gas is €475 per 1,000 litres. Gas oil for the PKTs is €1,638.04 to €1,704.83 per 1,000 litres, and A95N petrol is €1,300 to €1,320 per 1,000 litres. B6 diesel is €1,533.33 to €1,600 per 1,000 litres, and jet fuel without excise duty is €1,312.71 per 1,000 litres.
