Agriculture minister Plamen Abrovski is in Luxembourg for a two-day meeting of EU farm ministers, the ministry said.

The EU Council on agriculture and fisheries meets today and tomorrow. The ministers want to agree a partial general approach on a proposed regulation setting out the terms on which the EU backs farmers under the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The text covers the period after 2027. The meeting has opened.

The EU Council website says the European Commission proposes a simpler and more flexible framework. It is meant to secure farmers' incomes, make payments fairer and better targeted, and make it easier for a new generation to take over farms. The rules are also meant to help farms manage risk and stay viable. Another aim is a better balance between common rules and incentives for the climate, the environment and animal welfare.

The ministers will also discuss trade in farm products. The Council last discussed the topic in July.
